An Indoors Walker

Rating:

What was your concern with this review?

This is my second Walker 9er. We gifted the first one to a dear friend who was unable to buy her own and after a trial run it was clearly just what she needed to become more mobile. She is in her nineties and would agree with all my comments in this review.

So I made the purchase of walker number 2 and delivery was early, taking four days instead of the scheduled seven from Sweden to UK. The walker is a sturdy yet surprisingly light item. It looks as though it should be heavier. The wheels have solid rubberised tyres which have some bounce and make a soft ride. I use it mainly for indoors and shopping around the supermarkets. It has height adjustable handles and has provision for a seat backrest, but I found that the backrest was not very durable on the first walker and although Trionic replaced it under the guarantee the replacement did not last long, so I now use the new one without backrest. Quite honestly I found the walker more comfortable without it.

The two things which set the Trionic walker apart from any others that I have seen are the front wheel alignment mechanism and the hub braking system. The wheel alignment prevents ‘shimmying’ and is a marvellous invention. The brakes are smooth, powerful and easily adjustable. Occasionally the cables can snag on nearby furniture but that is not a real issue. However, a design that puts the cables inside the frame would be a great improvement both for convenience and streamlined appearance.

The walker stows easily in our ‘average’ saloon car. The supplied user guide shows how it folds easily and stresses the importance of locking the frame open to preserve the integrity of the wheel mechanism before use.

I also have a walker 14er for mainly outdoor use in town and on light, off-road situations. Plus, I have a veloped 14er for all-terrain walking. Based on my experience with these two larger models I would not recommend the walker 9er for rough terrain.

One criticism I often hear is that the Trionic range is expensive. Sorry, but you get what you pay for. Yes, the walker is not cheap but the quality of the item and the after sales service make it excellent value for money. Also, in UK, it is exempt from Value Added Tax.
